Scoring

How PTE Academic is scored

Each response scored on applicable traits: Content, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Grammar, Vocabulary. A human expert reviews Content (and, for the essay, Discourse/Grammar/Vocabulary range) before the final score is confirmed. Trait scores feed into skill scores — single items can count toward multiple skills simultaneously.

FAQ

PTE Academic frequently asked questions

How is PTE Academic scored?

PTE is scored primarily by AI, with a human expert reviewing Content (and Discourse/Grammar/Vocabulary range for the essay) before the final score is confirmed — a hybrid model, not zero human involvement. Scores range from 10–90 for each communicative skill (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing) and overall. The AI scores both enabling skills (grammar, fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, discourse) and communicative skills.

How quickly do PTE results come out?

Pearson typically delivers results within 48 business hours of completing the test. Many test-takers receive them in under 24 hours.

How long are PTE Academic scores valid?

2 years from the test date. Most institutions will not accept scores older than 2 years, though some (particularly universities) may be flexible.

Is PTE Academic accepted for Australian and UK visas?

Yes — PTE Academic is accepted by the UK Home Office for all UK visa categories, and by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for all Australian visa subclasses. It is also accepted by New Zealand Immigration.

What is the duration of the PTE Academic test?

Approximately 2 hours including an optional 10-minute break. The test consists of three parts: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening, taken in a single uninterrupted session.

Can I choose which skills to retake?

No — PTE Academic must be taken in full each time. There is no partial retake option. You can register for a new test date at any time with no mandatory waiting period.
